(NEW) Here we have a fine dreadnought from Oneida, NY’s Chad Gillander, one with an assertive voice and a mix of modern and traditional construction ideas. Gillander is a relatively new name in the luthiery world, but we have been quite impressed with his work, and are happy to represent his instruments after a strong showing at the Woodstock International Luthier’s Showcase.
This dreadnought more or less conforms to the original Martin silhouette, and has a torrefied Adirondack spruce top and tight-flamed figured mahogany back/sides. It has a bit of a secret weapon, though, in its adjustable sound port on the bass side, upper bout. Gillander has fashioned a simple but effective sliding door, just under four inches wide, that can be open, closed or any point in between. This not only changes what the player hears, it also seems to affect the percussive character of the instrument, adding a variability to the tonal coloring. It’s pretty darned cool!
Cosmetic appointments include rosewood body binding, herringbone top purfling and rosette, herringbone back strip and large-swirl Tor-Tis pick guard. The fingerboard is ebony, with gold EVO frets and diamond/square inlays.
For specs, we’ve got 1 3/4″ nut, 2 5/16″ string spacing at the saddle, 25.4″ scale length. The neck is a modified low oval, giving it a quick playing modern feel. The tuners are nickel Waverly.
Being a show guitar, this dreadnought shows some light signs of handling, and has some small dings on the back. Gillander has authorized to sell it as new with full warranty to the first owner. Includes original hard case.
