(NEW) If you asked us to start rattling off perfect tone wood combinations, the ones that impeccably compliment each other and add up to more than the sum of their parts, we would say something like “That’s easy… Adirondack and mahogany… German and Indian rosewood… and of course, sinker redwood and walnut!”
Indeed, we’ve sold redwood/walnut guitars many times now, and they always have a distinctive voice and a ton of personality. Huss & Dalton is always eager to build these for us, and the T-0014 has become our go-to small-body guitar from our friends in Staunton VA.
A short scale, 14-fret guitar built in the Martin 00 style (vs the Gibson L-00 style) the T-0014 does just about everything an OM does, with a smaller footprint and higher comfort factor for many players. Sinker redwood is on the soft side for a top wood, has a lot of sustain and a rich, pillowy voice. Black walnut is a lot like mahogany in its stiffness-to-weight (this guitar is noticeably lightly built) but can surpass mahogany in the sustain department. The combination has an undeniable warmth. The guitar is not especially loud, but it doesn’t take much energy to get the top moving, to experience the full voice.
Cosmetics include tortoise body binding with black/white/black top purfling and white line side purfling (setting it off nicely from the figured walnut sides) and a traditional 3-ring rosette. Dark ebony fingerboard with dot inlays. Ebony bridge and pins, nice tall bone saddle. 1 23/32″ nut width and 2 1/4″ string spacing at the saddle. Mahogany neck with satin finish and modified “V” neck profile. Waverly 1129 Special Issue Vintage Oval tuning machines. Includes tweed style TKL hard case.
This is a fabulous little box which would stand proud in any collection!
