(NEW) Pirate Guitars is the brainchild of Andy Armstrong, a talented builder in Bozeman MT who for the last seven years has been apprenticing and assisting the great Kevin Kopp. While working side by side with Kevin has imbued Andy’s instruments with some of the same vibes as the guitars made by his mentor, Pirate Guitars also have their own thing going, and it’s a GOOD thing. This 000 is a perfect introduction!
This lightweight guitar has the woody resonance of a good vintage Martin, but also has a clarity and balance that allows it to stand up alongside modern boutique builds. It has a torrefied Adirondack top and braces, Honduran mahogany back and sides and Madagascar rosewood fingerboard and bridge. The appointments are a mixture of “18” and “28” styles, it has herringbone top purfling and ivoroid binding but no back strip and a simple single band rosette.
Short 24.9″ scale with 1 3/4″ nut width and 2 5/16″ string spacing at the saddle. The mahogany neck has a comfortable gentle “C” shape. Hot hide glue construction. The tuners are relic’d Waverly.
It may not be apparent from the photograph, but this guitar has a lightly aged lacquer finish. Andy has a slightly different approach than Kevin Kopp when aging his guitars, and the results are extremely subtle. Still, he achieves the goal of breaking the surface tension of the lacquer, allowing the top to breath and vibrate. The tonal benefits are apparent in the guitar’s excellent sound.
